Talking About Home Schooling

Have you ever talked about home schooling for your child? Well, in a day and age when a good education is more important than ever, parents want their children to attend the best schools possible. If a private institution is out of the question, the highest-rated public school is the next best thing, but most people rarely talk about home schooling.

I’ve worked most of my life as a freelance writer and have had the opportunity to get to know many students that are home schooled and who have gone on to achieve great things in life. When I speak to their parents about home schooling, they tell me that they opted for that route for a number of reasons.

Reasons to Talk About Home Schooling

The first and most important is the homeschooling curriculum. There are many well-respected home school courses of study available that provide as much or more education than many public schools do, and the classes students take are always available. In other words, they don’t have to worry about a course being filled up or canceled for lack of interest.

Another big boon I hear about home schooling is the lack of social problems students encounter. One lady told me her daughter was being bullied to the point that she felt obligated to remove her from school and have her home schooled, and said that now her daughter is flourishing.

There is definitely a trade-off in the sense that that there are not as many opportunities to interact with peers and develop the same level of social maturity as students who attend private and public schools do, but even that is changing.

I wrote a story a few years ago about a basketball team comprised entirely of players that were part of a home schooling association. They practiced, played games and traveled together with a group of like-minded young people in which no one is picked on or made to feel isolated.

There are other social activities that parents of home schooled students can join that will allow their children to interact with their peers.

A good friend of mine recently told me that her son was facing some difficulties in the school to which he had just transferred and was practically begging her to be home schooled. She told me that she did not want to even talk about homeschooling, because she, like so many others, feared her child wouldn’t receive the same level of education or social development that he would in a traditional school.

Talking About Home Schooling is Certainly Not For Everyone

I don’t think that home schooling is necessarily for everyone, but I think that there are benefits, and I think if a parent feels that his or her child may do better in such an environment, it is important to at least talk about home schooling as a possible alternative.

Consider Homeschooling Online

For some families, homeschooling online is becoming more and more of a consideration in order to help cut down on education costs. The rapid development of online home school programs has also allowed many to enjoy home schooling and the best of both worlds – a high quality of education and at very reasonable prices. Today, the decision between quality and cost for an online homeschool education is no longer a concern and for several years now, many people have opted for homeschooling online as opposed to public schools, and for good reasons.

Finding Reliable Homeschooling Online Programs

When you take the time to look for good and reliable homeschooling online programs, you will be amazed at the sheer number of websites offering this kind of home school education. While concerns over the risks of enrolling in a non-accredited home online school, generally referred to as mills is a matter of concern, a careful analysis and investigation, thanks in part to some government agencies, one can more likely locate an accredited online institution. Accreditation officially recognizes an institution as one following the recommended curriculum developed by professionals and that is evaluated by accredited bodies. Home schooling online has the strength of providing individualized instructional programs based on a child’s specific needs. With many students struggling to understand complex concepts, a private homeschooling school allows a student to have access to different teachers and this greatly assists in the learning process.

Committing to Homeschooling Online Programs

Homeschooling also acts as a training platform for students in ways we may not discern at first. For example, consider what is required to remain enrolled in a homeschooling online program – commitment. One of the reasons why students fail to complete their assignments is a lack of commitment. Without commitment, rarely anything worthwhile is rarely accomplished. With a homeschool curriculum, it will provide an opportunity to train the student to develop this vital quality by requiring that students avail themselves to ‘classes’. This kind of commitment is not difficult to cultivate when you consider that this is not a traditional classroom environment. The media or home school online platform allows the students to choose what works for them, either in multimedia format or in other resources. Since students will most of the time study the homeschooling curriculum in isolation, it can also be a way for them to develop responsibility due to the level of independence that homeschooling online offers. As we move towards a more online-based form of schooling, online education is likely to grow in a big way.
